This area was a dispersed rural community in the Cherokee Nation during the 19th century, until 1888, when the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway (KAVR) built a railroad line through it. The population was 3,169 at the 2010 census, compared to the figure of 2,842 recorded in 2000. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area.
